In this post I want to talk to you about stigma and discrimination. These are just words, but they carry the power to destroy lives. Stigma is a negative attitude toward any given characteristic of a person. This is often a broad and community issue fueled by discriminatory behavior of even a few and belief in untruths about those characteristics. Stigma is considered to be a negative portion of discrimination. Discrimination is the treatment or consideration of a group by... Read More
The EatLafayette campaign is underway. If you are like me, I did not know exactly what this about when I first saw the logos and heard about it. In a nutshell, for the past 5 years, local restaurants have been offering special deals and special menu items for patrons during the summer. The 2009 campaign is from June 22 to Aug. 15. It's purpose is to support local restaurants, which is much needed, believe it or not, especially during the slow summer months. Just... Read More
Anyone see Oprah on June 30, 2009, talking about a calorie restriction diet? From what Dr. Oz said, it can basically add years, if not decades, to your life. On the web site Topix for Lafayette, LA, where local gossip rules the day, there is a running tit-for-tat between deputies and officers, both current and former, and of course residents who are... I like to think I'm politically savvy but I learned something new today that shocked even me. It turns out that there are five Catholic Supreme Court Justices. I would have never guessed that. Even more intriguing is the prospect of moving that number up one with the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor who is a Catholic. Judge Sotomayor would replace Justice David H. Souter who is an Episcopalian. While Catholicism is the single biggest denomination in the United State... Read More
A favor to ask, it only takes a minute... Thanks. * I* 6*Y Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged &nbs... Read More
And the thing that folks need to be aware of is that there's not as much help out there for victims as the media would like you to believe. Get mad. Get involved. Thousands, if not millions, of victims are awaiting the assistance they so desperately need in order to be able to leave their abusive situations.... Read More
